Mac Zombies
I got myself a desk at BNOTIONS today and all I gotta do in return is blog
No worries! Here’s what happened today at the office:
I’m starting to get a bit tired of every Mac user jumping down my throat whenever I ask about or say anything about a PC on twitter.
The other day I went to visit the family and my teenage sister asked me to fix her computer and install an antivirus program. I use a purchased one but she wanted free software so I polled twitter asking “what’s the best free antivirus for a PC?” Right away I get 5 replies, and 4 of them were from snooty mac users who thought they were being clever.
Mac user: “Best antivirus is to get a mac”
Let’s be real here. MacOS is a fine UNIX based system and I’m not averse to it based in its own merits. But the inside of the machine works just as well as any PC, particularly if you tweak your PC properly. Sure Macs are “easier” to use but it’s not because their interface is in itself easier. If you learned on a Windows computer, Windows is easy to use – why would a company that wants to stay competitive make something that is hard to use intentionally. Doesn’t make sense. Both systems have a learning curve.
The ease of use inherent in a MAC they are pretty much ready to use out of the box because Apple makes good software applications in house, while PCs have a lot of software vendors who preload a bunch of free trials of their app on your PC desktop – but this problem is very easily remedied with the good old uninstall command. Apple has preloaded programs too but they are proprietary – iMovies is great and so are all the cool little apps that are imaged to every Mac’s OS.
I used to own a Mac, iTV, airport and iPod, so I’ve been there. I would even buy an Apple again if it were not for the expense that is attached to the computer based almost solely on the fact that Mac is a lifestyle brand and meant more for fun (although it can do work too) and charges more based on that marketing. As for the hardware, the inside, Macs are identical to PCs. They use Intel processors just like any PC and use Nvidia video cards etc. They just charge much more for the name.
The other great expense is the jokes that PC users become the butt of for all the snooty mac users who will buy anything with the Apple logo on it. I almost bought one myself but since I use a lot of video editing software I could not justify a mac that would have cost nearly 3 times the amount of my new PC and still didn’t have specs as high.
It’s sometimes frightening how cult-like or zombie-like you mac users can get. So one track minded about everything mac and you guys have no room in your head for anything PC or Microsoft related. Mac users act like they’ve never had a problem with their systems! But I always see the Genius Bar packed and booked for days. So what is it? Is the ritual of being seen with your venti Starbucks latte at the Mac store so rewarding that you completely forget that you’re still in for some computing downtime?
I think you just have to do what’s right for you. Since when did the computer you have determine your caste in computing society. I think it’s sick that mac users actually look down on PC users as they cradle their silly iPads.
Open your mind, you can have both a mac and a PC even. Let’s all just get along.
Just shut up already with your Mac snobbery.

As much as I want all things apple right now I hear you; there is nothing wrong with PCs. I would have had an answer for you on the antivirus if you haven’t found a good one yet. Lemme know!
as an ex pc user, recently made the change to mac, i agree they are a lifestyle brand … but there are more differences than meet the eye … already i find my mac more powerful, easier, and yes prettier, than any pc i have used … agreed they are expensive, but worth it in the long run … pc software will cost you a lot more .. on average a few hundred dollars more from what i have noticed recently …and then there is the whole virus thing, true the hardware has similarities, but the fact that mac’s are unix based makes them 10x more secure … that may change one day, but for now they remain the safer bet …just my 2 cents …
Love this post Michael, I have never had a Mac myself mainly because of the price. I dont plan on getting one either, a non-mac system is good enough for me and what I do. The only real big advantage I see with having a mac is it doesnt get viruses, well if you have good anti-virus software on your PC and look after it, you wont have any problems! So PC for me!
pc software will cost you a lot more .. on average a few hundred dollars more from what i have noticed recently .
