Make Web Not War Community Night in Toronto
4
Julia Stowell and the Make Web Not War team deserve credit where credit is due. My first experience with Web Not War was 2 years ago in Montreal and the brand has come a long way since then. People are really into this community initiative and the “Make Web Not War” brand/property has found a special place in the hearts of the startup and development community, particularly in Toronto. Mention Web Not War and you’re likely to hear how Microsoft and Windows Azure have really put in some great work and time into bringing people together in the open-source space and the overall tech scene in Canada.
Make Web Not War Community Night in Toronto went down at the Drake Underground with a live stream on Facebook. The venue was perfect, the planning nearly flawless and the company was excellent. Among the many faces in the room were our good friends from Bnotions, Atendy, Ladies Learning Code, My City Lives, Saul Colt (Freshbooks), Erin Bury (Sprouter), Chris Eben (TWG/Startup Weekend), and of course the Microsoft team, Julia, Jonathan, Nik and Reemah.
Thanks to all who attended. The Epilogger team had a blast and SOME of our team partied till they dropped! and we are thrilled to have gotten such a great response from the audience for our Alpha demo. Just wait till you see the Beta on December 9th! Stay tuned on the Epilogger blog for more news soon! By the way, Drake Hotel, cinnamon buns on a stick? SMART!
I hope you Windows Phone 7 folks are reading this because I would love to get my hands on a new Windows Phone 7 to replace my slow, dated, blackberry bold 9700. It served me well but it’s time for a change and I am sick of being hassled by Android and iPhone acolytes trying to woo me over to one or the other platform. Let’s give Windows Phone 7 a whirl! Rozenblit and Reemah let me play with their phones last night and I liked what I saw, so here is my photo scavenger hunt to win that phone!
Mogasm Toronto 2011
1Another year and another crazy fun Mogasm. I didn’t think I could top last year’s fundraiser but I was wrong. Thanks to the help of my good friend and excellent event planner, Jocelyn Butler, Mogasm Toronto’s sophomore year set the bar even higher for Movember parties.
This year, Movember’s theme it “country gentleman” and that gave us some interesting ideas that we had no idea would work or not. MogasmTO this year had a nail hammering competition and an arm wrestling tournament. I didn’t honestly think people would go for the arm wrestling on tony old Toronto but I was proven wrong soon enough. Surprisingly, the tournament card was filled up by ladies before any man would venture to sign up for it. Goes to show that Mo Sistas can throw down with the Mo Bros and even show them up! Eventually some gents nutted up and an arm wrestling bonanza ensued. My arm is still sore from my bouts but it’s all for a great cause.
I’m not sure what my favourite part of the night was. Photojunkie‘s great photobooth (the pic above is courtesy of none other than the man himself), the red hot DJ set by Speedboats and Big Explosions, the feats of strength and manliness, the great people who showed, the appearance from the folks at Movember Canada – so much fun was had and it made for a great addition to the Tweetgasm “franchise.”
We’re very proud of all of you who came out int he bitter cold and showed your support for changing the face of men’s health. Canada is making a big difference and has already raised over $23 million to lead the world in Movember support and breaking last year’s record!

Stella Artois Legere Block Party is On!!
4The contest has closed but the party will rage on! Toronto has spoken and we listened! You will recall my announcement about the Stella Artois Legere block party contest last month and may be wondering what part of the Big Smoke gets the all expense paid block party extravaganza. Well the votes are in and counted and the winner is DOWNTOWN! Congrats to Keri Blog for getting the downtowners on board for an epic block party courtesy of Stella Artois Legere!
Stella has absolutely impressed me with their commitment to making summer awesome for so many people. If you were out and about this summer you may have stumbled across the Stella Artois Smooth Taste team and walked away with a free sample of Stella Artois Legere and a smile on your face. Last year Stella Artois was all about the TIFF and blew our socks off! Also shout out if you got to learn the 9 step pouring ritual and draught your own beer at the Stella Artois Draughtmasters Competition last year! This year’s selection process is now underway so make sure to keep an eye on the goings on by following @StellaArtoisCan on twitter!
OK so here are the details on the Stella Artois Block Party.

Anime North 2011
2It’s no secret that I’m kind of a geek and it’s more than likely that you, the one reading this post, is cut from the same nerdy cloth. Whether you’re a closet geek or a full blown level 10 Dweeb Wizard you could have a little fun at a special interest convention. I’ve covered a few comic cons in the past, including Fan Expo 2010 and Wizard World Comicon 2011, because I think a day at the con can be a fun way to spend an afternoon for anyone. You can be among like minded people in total comfort without any judgement and that’s a great environment to be a part of. Oh and apparently there’s a whole lotta dancing.
Anime North is uncharted territory for me. I grew up with traditional characters like Superman and the lot who tend to embody decidedly Western values and culture. When you jump into the world of manga and anime it’s an entirely new ball game. Other than the often distinct Asian aesthetic woven into most of the material you will also notice, should you be brave enough to jump right in, that the creators behind any given mange title are just about fearless with what subject matter they will explore in their works. One trip to Anime North or a similar anime convention (although Anime North is a particularly massive one) and you will see manga and anime that pretty much scoff in the face of the old Comics Code Authority with subject matter such as ultra gore, tentacles and even gay sex between popular characters (Yaoi and Yuri). Many of you are probably most familiar with popular titles like Dragonball Z when it comes to anime/manga but that’s just the beginning and only describes a series that ended in 1996! Since then the sky has been the limit and manga has become synonymous with outlandish, unbridled, hyperbole – and it’s great.
I attended this year’s Anime North 2011 with local nerd princesses Heather Cooper and Alice Quinn who convinced me to cosplay for the first time ever. They dressed as two of the three Powerpuff girls (Dani Ray was supposed to be the third but came down with a nasty case of bronchitis) and needed a Professor Utonium. All I needed was a labcoat, a tobacco pipe and a look of fatherly pride. Check. Granted the costume was nowhere near as elaborate as the bulk of those I saw at the con, it was at least a start. Most of the costumes were just really badass. Those of you who’ve been to a few of these: have you ever noticed the high prevalence of people carrying giant scythes? What is it about anime and garden tools? My favourite scythe wielder was the Double Rainbow Unicorn, by far.
To be honest I don’t know if I am yet ready to go full out cosplay just yet but I suppose I will work on it. Maybe it’s because all the manga I’ve ever read has been brought to me by my brother who is a big otaku and loves all things Japanese. Then again I do tend to go all out on Halloween so maybe it’s not that different. If I was to be asked what my most favourite costume of the con was, I would have to give it to the Phoenix Wright “OBJECTION” guy (see slideshow below). No scythe needed to cut down the competition. Although black Jesus came in a close second…coming.

Networking IRL
2Coming from foundations in hard-line SEO, social media was, for me, a learned skill that I honed during my days at Columbia, editing Media Ownership and Concentration in America. I would say that social media is not so much technical as it is brand building writ large.
The tools may be somewhat technical to the uninitiated and even somewhat dizzying in their plentitude but with enough time spent on getting to know the lay of the land one can learn quickly which ones are the most popular and how to use them to some extent. As far as how to use the tools and the strategies you will find that you learn all of this from the very community that engages in social media. That’s the real underlying aspect of SM that those inside know very well but only speak of if asked directly. Furthermore, it seems that the more people interact online, the more they want to meet up in person in some sort of capacity. That’s why tweetups and tumblr meetings have become popular ways to build local communities where social media users make friends and network.
The panel that I spoke on, put on by the Schulich Alumni Association could be looked at as a meetup as well since people were there to network. Although most tweetups don’t usually have formal speakers (not that they shouldn’t) the opportunities to learn are still there. I suppose the only difference is that in this instance we had a room of complete beginners who I sensed came in hopes of actually getting down to the nitty gritty of how to blog, tweet, share, etc. In a setting that’s a little more formal, such as it was, the environment may not be as open as a tweetup. I’m not sure. If you folks are reading this feel free to get in contact with me if you have any questions and I will point you in the right direction.
If you’re looking to get started with networking IRL, @photojunkie and I do a monthly tweetup called “Tweetgasm” at the Gladstone hotel and they’ve become quite well-attended. It’s been a great way to reaffirm the Toronto SM scene. The last one was a big one as the Gladstone celebrated 5 years as an urban art space (122+ as a continuously operating hotel) so you should definitely come out to the next one and bring your twitter handle of some business cards.
Yes, I said business cards. In a post I discussed their use and asked “are business cards obsolete” so check it out and let me know what you think.
A Week of Social Media
3Wow last week was a very busy week in Nusland and there is much to report. Many of you probably attended a social media event in one of the 9 cities it took place in: New York, San Francisco, Rome, Paris, Toronto, Sao Paulo, London, Hong Kong, Istanbul.
For those of you who have yet to hear about Social Media Week, it’s an internationl conference that takes place in various venues in the cities in which is takes place. The conference is in its second year and, you guessed it, is all about social media, its practices, applications, and upcoming trends. This was my first year attending and there was lots to catch with 70 events in Toronto alone! I highly recommend going out to a few seminars, panels or presentations if you get the chance to do so next year as it’s a great way to learn a few new tricks and meet new people to grow your own network.
This year was particularly interesting because I think that social media has matured to a point where the body of knowledge surrounding it has been refined through its wide usage and the boiling down of social networks to the major ones like Twitter and Facebook. This time last year you will remember that there were still lots of other social networks to consider in a social media push and it was overwhelming. Google Wave was supposed to be the next big thing and Delicious and 4chan were still going strong. Now we’re in a spot where some of the old giants have fallen and Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, and (arguably) Tumblr are at the top of the mountain with no intentions of moving until at least 2012.
Additionally the field is getting to be better understood even by dilettants – at least to a point where they appreciate the value for social media and community management. It will be interesting to see where the game is by next year but for now it seems that social media is just the way of the web, period. My prediction is that mobile will be even more important by next year and will be (if it isn’t already) the next frontier to conquer and saturate. I’m looking your way, RIM – reinvent or get out of the way of Apple, Android and Symbian. The Playbook is a good start, let’s see what else is up your sleeves.
The highlights this year were weighted heavily in some really valuable sessions and counterbalanced with some great meetups. I attended quite a few sessions but was rather selective with them at the same time as it’s impossible to attend all the sessions. Personally I think Wednesday was the most action packed day of the week as the stars seemed to align to feature some of the most interesting sessions all on that day.
It started early in the morning with a great analytics session from Sysomos and Fleishman Hillard with Sheldon Levine and David Bradfield, then moved on to the panel I moderated called “Social Media for Mayor” with some really great speakers, including my friend Dave Fleet. I was actually taken aback by how quickly my session filled up and even more humbled by the interest generated by it – it trended in Toronto and was watched by quite a few people on the Ustream feed. Big thank you to Bnotions and the Yorkville Media Centre for providing the venue and stream. For you sports fans, Jon Sinden did a really great presentation at Real Sports about connecting fans to brands in the sporting world and finally Sean Ward’s tutorial on how to get up and blogging with style. I missed the NKPR event on account of not being able to clone myself to be in two places simultaneously.
I lamented missing “The Social Family” event but I was so drained by Thursday that I had to recharge before dragging myself to the Hideout for the Love a Heart bachelor/bachelorette auction. You may have heard that Gail Gabrielle of Real Sports, the final person on the block, was bought for freaking $2002 cash! Unreal.
Friday was a great denouement and meeting the folks at Facebook Canada in the morning was really interesting. There are some cool new things being rolled out and you should be hearing more about them soon on your Facebook feed. Many of us were delighted to see nearly the entire twitter community all in one room at Lee’s Palace for Gen Y TO, immediately following a rousing round of powerpoint karaoke – I hear Alkarim and Paul Crowe cleaned house.
Head on over to Casie Stewart’s blog for some great pics of the GenYTO party. You’ll recognize a lot of familiar faces. By the way, Casie and I kicked some serious butt at the foosball table. Ghetto fab.
Stay tuned for the Valentine’s day post!
Tobogganing in Toronto HD! #BoggTO
3I guess Joel had a look out the window since moving right by Trinity Bellwoods Park and saw lots of snow and some steep hills and thought to call an impromptu tobogganing outing over twitter. I guess you could call it a Tobogganing flash mob!
In attendance were myself, Joel, Davida, Casie, Mads, Kelly, Jess, and Sheldon and my new HD cam. I finally got my hands on a suitable pocket sized HD cam with decent sound and picture quality so I thought I would take it out for a spin! If you want the same one, it’s the Kodak Zi8 pocket video camera and it was only $120 at Henry’s! Here’s what went down before the sun set.
It’s kinda nice to be a kid again and just barrel down a hill at light sped on a piece of wood or plastic. Don’t you think? What would you do if you could be a kid again for one day?
Dead Nus and Electric Christmas
0Yikes, I’ve not blogged in quite a few days now and some of you are probably wondering what the hold up is?
Well the new job got real busy all of a sudden and we’re working hard to make our clients awesome, dare I say Mighty! I’ve also been the sickest I’ve ever been in years. Not sure what’s plaguing me but I need to beat this thing fast because of this:
Monday December 20th

I’ve been working with Sean on getting ready for our Electric Christmas gig this Monday at the Horseshoe Tavern and that’s been keeping me busy on the old 6-string.. We’ve got some real treats for you at the ol’ Shoe and you should definitely get down there and have a ball. Live music to be had and I hear a certain Nus may be making a stage appearance…
It’s shaping up to be THE event to be at before the Yuletide is upon us so be there or be square. We have an all star cast of musicians and merrymakers including:

See you there!
Where My Mos At: #Movember Gala
3I’m so proud of all of you this year. Thanks to the generosity of all my mo bros and sistas and to the hard work of the entire Movember team, both digital and brick and mortar, we have made this a record year at over $14,000,000 and counting! Movember Gala Parté in Toronto was just insane. So much facial hair and ridiculous costumes, not to mention lovely and charming ladies to boot! I even went to the Montreal party the next evening because I just could not get enough of hanging out with Moffitt and Garone.
It’s crystal clear, Canada loves Movember and is dedicated to the fight against prostate cancer. In all likelihood many of you reading this were there since we had well over 3,000 attendees at the Toronto event alone, but for those of you who could not make it I will say that I missed you there and hope to see you at the few Movember events coming up in Toronto. Up next is the MoCupcakes competition on November 30 at 6pm at Sense Appeal (96 Spadina Ave) where I will sit on the judges panel. Click here to RSVP to the EventBrite!
You can see the whole collection of pics from my little camera on my Flickr page right HERE for the whole scoop on the events in both cities. There are some really wacky ones to be sure. I didn’t think the Mo of the year in Toronto could be topped (his pic is at the top left of this post) but the one in Montreal, I think, blew him out of the water. Here is a pic of him but look at the others in the Flickr stream and you will see that it’s even more awesome. Also if you look closely you may spot the son of a particular ex-Prime Minister in the photo set.
Also check out Casie’s blog for some great shots right HERE.
We’re coming up on the end of Movember and I’m looking forward to the grand shave-off event before life goes back to normal so stay tuned!
Furry Crotch Chariot #MoRidesTO
2#MoRidesTO is happening tomorrow at 12 noon at Dundas Square by hook or by crook so we hope to see you there!
Every time we mention it we get funny looks and screwfaces and I have to explain the pun we’re playing on. So for your clarity here’s a picture of what we’re talking about.
There you have it. A bunch of us will be there, along with Melissa Smich, Lauren O’Nizzle, Guy Gal and #TheBizMedia and Carmen Cheung, our photographer. For just $1 or more you can ride the mo, get your picture taken and have a chance of making it into the video that will go up on youtube! Also Strategic Objectives PR will be giving away lots of free Caramilk and chewing gum! All proceeds will go to Movember to help fight prostate cancer.
Thank you very much to Amanda Lynn Ballard for creating the furry monstrosity and a big thank you to West49 at YorkDale mall for supplying the sweet, top of the line Sector 9 long board so our mo can have wheels! The ride is a dream and smooth as silk. It’s almost like snowboarding on concrete! You can get one just like it at the Yorkdale store and they will build you a complete deck with trucks and wheels and get you gliding in no time!
See you tomorow! Your Mo Chariot awaits!
