In today’s tech savvy world in which people connect online like never before the question of whether certain traditional marketing and networking practices are obsolete always come up. One subject that is ever present is that of business cards and whether they are needed in a mobile enabled world.

Michael Nus business cardsI still have trouble believing that they are obsolete just yet. So far there just isn’t one killer app that everyone uses to share their information between mobile devices – or if it does exist, it’s not yet ubiquitous enough to be called a killer app. Iphones have “Bump” and Blackberry has BBM through which you can try to scan a new contact’s QR code (sometimes takes a couple of tries, making the interaction awkward) and so on. They are proprietary contact management tools but I’d like to see a real cross platform one that becomes the standard.

Perhaps in formal business networking scenarios perhaps it’s possible that such an app could spell the end for business cards but I’m seeing lots of bloggers and other internet enthusiasts toting nifty little cards or even stickers to get their name out or promote their latest work of art or prose no matter where they are. The trend seems to be at a spot where modern business cards, particularly the ones carried by the bloggers, don’t even have phone numbers on them anymore. It’s usually just a URL and a Twitter handle. My own card, designed by @rebheartsyou and printed expertly by Guerilla Printing is within that vein and includes the address of this website, my email address and Twitter handle. Of course the phrase “The Holy Trinity of Happiness” is on the back just in case business card SEO ever becomes a consideration :)
