Michael, sadly this is the exact same pattern that blogging went through. In the early days, it didn't matter what you did for a living or even what you blogged "about"; it was enough that you knew how to use the tools. The latest social media backlash (Twitter, etc.) is different only because it happened much quicker. Humans are predictable. :(

But despite that, it's still possible to meet great people. MOCC is a great example, and it's heartwarming to see so many people getting together to help him and his family. Although I can't make it tomorrow night, I'll be there in spirit. And I'm usually up for a beer!

This is right on the money Michael, those were great days as people met each other in 'real life' for the first time.. 'I follow you on Twitter' was a common greeting and we were all in an exclusive little club of like-minded folk ridiculed by the business-people who joked that I don't care what people have for breakfast. Since then the relationship between the 'early-folk' could easily be described with a 'It's complicated' status. Have we grown up, has social media grown up? So much jealousy, derision and ego-stroking has replaced the combined power of the 'community'... could something like a HoHoTo be conjured up from the ether now? Maybe, but I fear it might get bogged down in conflicting interests of it's corporate-supported 'influencers'.

At my 5-year high school reunion I first realized that 'you can never go back'... but as for that crazy-eyed community of early adopters in Toronto I kinda wish I could. We were all on the same side back then... I hope to see all the old and new 'cool kids' come together in support of Michael O'Connor Clarke this Thursday and see if we can't recapture that 'magic in a bottle' again.

First person I hear say that 'social media is like high school' gets kicked in the nuts.

I'm with ya. I miss those days, too. It was fun and new, there was an innocence about it all, there was no hierarchy, just like you described in your 3rd paragraph.

And then everyone got all expert-y and cool, and it lost its glow, and it all became banal and expected, and people stopped commenting on blogs, and everyone was so cool and over it, and the shininess went away, and I miss it, too.

Great post.
